Northrop Grumman Space Systems has an opening for a Manager, Software Engineering 2 to join our team of highly qualified and diverse individuals within the Tactical Space Systems Division (TSSD) Resiliency Engineering organization. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California. Us: The Resiliency Engineering organization is a cross-functional department dedicated to developing, demonstrating, and fielding unique architectures, technologies, and products to protect space assets and ensure mission success in the face of natural and manmade threats to our space capabilities. We concentrate mainly on small- and medium-class missions, with smaller program teams, and strive to more quickly and efficiently deliver solutions through rapid prototyping and practices tailored for our customers’ specific risk tolerance. Role: Candidate will be responsible for the functional management of approximately 12-20 software engineering personnel assigned to fast-paced spacecraft programs for the Emerging Capabilities operating unit in Redondo Beach, CA. Management duties include conducting performance assessments, staffing, employee development, communication meetings, disciplinary actions, compensation adjustments, training & educational oversight/ approval and other routine personnel issues. Position will be responsible for establishing common processes and practices in cooperation with colleague managers across the sector. Must have experience in the full lifecycle of complex software systems. The candidate will work closely with program-assigned systems engineering, software development, and management professionals to ensure that the software lifecycle is accomplished with high quality and efficiency. This position requires the ability to track both the quality and timeliness of the organization’s products, and identification and remediation of potential issues before they become problems. Candidates will develop and manage detailed budgets and schedules and make work assignments for indirect tasking. This management position is allocated for approximately 20% of the successful candidate’s time, with fluctuations during the year due to business needs and the performance management cycle. All candidates must already have, or have the capability to move to, a program assignment supporting programs within the Emerging Capabilities portfolio for the remainder of their work hours. BS in Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other applicable STEM discipline
Minimum of 7 years of software engineering or other applicable engineering experience
Comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the software development lifecycle
Knowledge and understanding of standard NG Space Sector software engineering processes and tools such as: C/C++, Python, Git, Docker, Agile framework, object-oriented programming, embedded software best practices, hardware/software interfaces, software test best practices
Proven leadership qualities such as: strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated mentoring and/or coaching skills, excellent 3-way communication (upward, downward, and peer-to-peer), cross-discipline collaboration, exemplary professionalism and ability to maintain composure in stressful situations, proven time management and organizational skills to prioritize across concurrent program and functional responsibilities
Active SCI Clearance
Ability to obtain Special Access and Department of Defense (DoD) Top Secret clearances
An advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other STEM discipline
Currently-active DoD Top Secret clearance
Currently-active Special Access clearance(s) for Emerging Capabilities program(s)
10+ years of software engineering or other applicable engineering experience
Experience supporting rapid-development programs
Experience with multi-disciplinary assignments
Previous experience in at least one of the following technical areas: software control of hardware instrumentation; multiple iterations of the complete software design-build-test lifecycle as a practitioner; authoring of proposal inputs for software (task descriptions, basis of estimate); collaboration to develop cross-disciplinary or system-level architectures
Previous experience in at least one of the following leadership areas: engineering functional management; experience leading a team of 5+ employees with a record of on-time performance; ability to build, adjust, or maintain diverse/inclusive teams with engaged team members; advanced technical management degree(s) or certification(s); familiarity and demonstrated application of Agile methodologies
Development and/or demonstration of alternative work approaches
